There is a paradox at the heart of finger training for archery: you need strong fingers to draw a heavy bow consistently, but a death grip is the most common cause of a ruined release. Understanding this tension — and training both sides of it deliberately — is what separates archers who make progress from those who stay stuck.

Two Hands, Two Completely Different Jobs
Before you train anything, internalize this distinction:
The bow hand (the hand holding the bow) should be almost passive — a relaxed shelf for the bow grip to rest against. The force is applied through the heel of the thumb and the web of the hand; the fingers should be relaxed or lightly curled, never gripping. Gripping the bow causes torque, which throws arrows left and right.
The draw hand (the hand holding the string) needs controlled strength during the draw stroke, then the ability to relax completely — or in the case of a mechanical release, to trigger with minimal anticipation — at the moment of release. The fingers or release aid do the loading; the back muscles do the sustaining.
Training programs that just build general grip strength equally in both hands can make the bow-hand grip reflex worse, not better. You need targeted training that builds the right kind of strength in the right hand.
What Draw-Hand Strength Actually Looks Like
For finger shooters, the fingers need enough strength to hook the string cleanly under load and hold it through the draw without the hook slipping or the fingers trembling. This is primarily forearm flexor endurance, not peak grip force. You are not squeezing hard — you are maintaining a relaxed hook under sustained load for one to three seconds per shot, repeated dozens of times in a session.
For release aid shooters, the trigger finger (or thumb, depending on the release style) needs sensitivity and fine-motor control more than raw force. Overdeveloping that finger’s flexion strength makes anticipating the shot — and thus punching the trigger — more likely.
The Best Exercises for Archery Finger and Grip Strength
Rice Bucket Training — Fill a bucket with dry rice (or sand). Plunge your hand in and work through different motions: open and close the fist, rotate the wrist, pinch and release. Rice bucket training is uniquely valuable for archers because it builds both flexion and extension strength, develops tendon resilience across the full range of finger motion, and simultaneously trains the extension muscles that provide the counterbalance to drawing. Do 2–3 minutes per hand, two to three times per week.
Finger Extension Bands — Place a rubber band or dedicated finger extension band around all five fingertips and spread your fingers against its resistance. This trains the extensor muscles of the fingers, which are typically undertrained in archers. Balanced finger strength (flexion and extension) reduces the risk of tendinitis and helps with the open, relaxed bow hand. Do 3 sets of 20 reps per hand.
Pinch Grip Work — Hold a weight plate (or a folded towel wrapped around a dumbbell) between your thumb and fingers at your side, holding for 20–30 seconds. Pinch grip training builds the thumb and finger pad strength that helps finger shooters maintain a consistent hook position on the string without gripping excessively. Start light; this exercise is harder than it looks. Do 3 sets of 20–30 seconds per hand.
Forearm Flexor Curls — Sit with your forearm resting on a bench, wrist hanging over the edge, palm up. Curl a light dumbbell up using only the wrist and fingers. This builds the wrist flexors that support the draw hook. Use light weight and high reps (15–20) — you are training endurance, not max strength. Do 3 sets per hand.
Towel Hangs — Drape a folded towel over a pull-up bar and hang from it using your fingers wrapped around the towel. This builds grip endurance and tendon strength in a functional pulling position. Hold for 20–30 seconds, rest, repeat. Very effective for developing the finger resilience needed to shoot high arrow counts without hand fatigue.
What NOT to Do
Avoid heavy gripper training (closing spring-loaded grippers to maximum force). This overdevelops the flexor muscles and increases the involuntary closing reflex in the fingers — which is the last thing you want in a release hand that needs to open smoothly.
Avoid heavy wrist curls with maximal weight. Archery does not require peak wrist flexion force; it requires endurance and control. Heavy wrist curls can also irritate the tendons that run through the wrist, leading to inflammation that affects shooting.
Do not train finger or grip strength in the 24 hours before a competition. Accumulated fatigue in the fingers subtly changes your hook, your trigger feel, and your release timing in ways that are hard to consciously compensate for.
Balancing Strength and Relaxation
The goal of finger training for archery is not maximum strength. It is developing enough strength that you are never working near your limit, so the fingers can be relaxed during the hold and open naturally at release. When you have comfortable reserve strength, the fingers stop being a choke point in your shot cycle.
Pair your strength work with intentional relaxation practice. After each training session, spend five minutes doing slow, deliberate hand and forearm stretching: wrist flexion and extension stretches, individual finger pulls, and forearm massage. This restores range of motion and reinforces the relaxation response.
