In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, a peasant weapon turned one of the most powerful nations in Europe into a dominant military force. Welsh Origins: A Weapon Born in the Forests
The longbow was not an English invention. Its roots lie in Wales, where archers in the forests and hills of Gwent and Glamorgan were using bows over six feet long centuries before the English adopted them in large numbers. Welsh archers serving in English armies during the reign of Edward I (1272 to 1307) demonstrated the weapon’s devastating potential during the Welsh campaigns and later against the Scots.
Edward I was quick to recognize what he had seen. He began recruiting Welsh and English archers in large numbers and integrating them into his military strategy. By the time of Edward III in the mid-fourteenth century, the longbow had become the backbone of English armies. The tree of choice was English yew, specifically wood cut from the junction of the heartwood and sapwood, which combined the compression resistance of heartwood with the tension resistance of sapwood. When neither material alone would do, the bow used both simultaneously in every draw.
The Training Commitment: Seven Years to Master
No weapon in pre-modern military history demanded more from its users than the longbow. Contemporary accounts describe training periods of seven years or more before an archer was considered combat-ready. This was not hyperbole. War longbows had draw weights ranging from 100 pounds at the lower end to as much as 160 to 180 pounds for the most powerful examples. Crecy 1346: The Longbow Announces Itself
The Battle of Crecy on August 26, 1346 was the moment when the rest of Europe understood that the rules of warfare had changed. Edward III faced a French army that outnumbered his force significantly, and the French had the advantage of Genoese crossbowmen. What they did not account for was English longbowmen firing from prepared positions on a hillside.
The Genoese crossbowmen advanced first. Their crossbow strings had been dampened by rain during the march and had lost some tension, reducing their power. English longbowmen, who had kept their strings dry in their hats, opened fire. The longbow had an effective rate of fire of 10 to 12 arrows per minute, far exceeding the crossbow’s two or three bolts. The Genoese were overwhelmed and fell back.
The French cavalry charged through and over their own crossbowmen and directly into the longbow storm. Estimates of the number of English archers at Crecy range from 5,000 to 7,000. At maximum firing rate, that represents 50,000 to 84,000 arrows per minute. The French cavalry charged seventeen times. Each time, the horses were turned back or cut down. Crecy established that the longbow could stop a cavalry charge that had been the decisive weapon of medieval warfare for two centuries.
Agincourt 1415: Henry V and the Arrow Storm
Agincourt on October 25, 1415 remains the most famous longbow battle in history, partly because Shakespeare immortalized it and partly because the numbers are so striking. Henry V led a depleted, hungry English army, many sick with dysentery, against a French force that was substantially larger and contained the cream of French nobility.
Henry chose his ground carefully, forcing the French to advance through a narrow funnel of freshly plowed muddy fields flanked by woods. His archers, perhaps 5,000 out of a total force of around 8,000, lined the edges. When the French advanced, the archers began firing. The mud slowed the armored French knights and men-at-arms. The arrow storm was relentless.
French knights who survived the arrows were often so exhausted from fighting through mud in heavy plate that they could barely lift their weapons when they reached English lines. Agincourt killed several thousand French combatants, including many of the most prominent nobles in France, at a cost of a few hundred English dead. It remains one of the most lopsided victories in medieval military history, and the longbow made it possible.
The Mary Rose and Archaeological Evidence
In 1545, during a battle against a French invasion fleet, the English warship Mary Rose capsized and sank in the Solent. She stayed on the bottom for over 400 years before being raised in 1982. What came up with her was the most extraordinary cache of longbow equipment ever found.
The Mary Rose yielded 137 complete longbows and more than 3,500 arrows. The bows were still strung in their cases, perfectly preserved by the anaerobic mud. Analysis of these bows provided the first precise data on war longbow specifications. They ranged from 1.87 to 2.11 meters in length. Their draw weights, estimated from the thickness and density of the wood and from surviving staves that could be tested, ranged from about 100 to 185 pounds.
The arrows were equally revealing. Each was approximately 75 to 90 centimeters long with goose feather fletching and iron bodkin points specifically designed to penetrate plate armor at the narrow gaps between plates. The amount of craft and standardization evident in the Mary Rose arrows indicates that war archery had become an industrial-scale enterprise by the Tudor period.
The skeletal remains recovered with the Mary Rose included several individuals with the asymmetric bone development associated with longbow use, direct physical evidence that these were working archers.
The Decline: Firearms End an Era
The longbow’s decline was not sudden. Firearms began appearing on European battlefields in the late fourteenth century, but early guns were slow to load, unreliable in wet weather, and less accurate at range than a skilled archer. English armies continued to use longbows well into the sixteenth century even as continental armies shifted to firearms.
The decisive factor was not accuracy or range but training time. Teaching a man to fire a matchlock musket took weeks. Producing a war-capable longbow archer took seven or more years. As the pace of warfare increased and armies became larger, the economics were overwhelming. You could field five or ten musketeers for every longbowman you could train. By the mid-sixteenth century, the longbow was disappearing from English armies, and by 1595 it had been officially replaced by firearms in the English military establishment.
It was not that the longbow was less effective, weapon for weapon, than an early firearm. It was that a weapon requiring a decade of dedicated training was simply incompatible with the scale of modern warfare.
